A Brief Introduction of Suzhou Health College

Suzhou Health College is an advanced full-time college directly under Health Department of Jiangsu Province. Its predecessor is Nurse School of Boxi Hospital founded by American Christian Church in 1911. It is one of China’s earliest modern health colleges. After liberation, it was taken over by the people’s government and was named Sunan Suzhou Nurse School. Later Suzhou Xinmin Private School and Jiangding Nurse School were incorporated into it, and was renamed Jiangsu Suzhou Nurse School in 1953. In 1958, on the basis of Nurse School, Suzhou Medical Professional College was set up. In 1965, it changed its name into Suzhou Health School of Jiangsu Province. In 1997, the affiliated Nurse School of No.1 People’s Hospital attached to the former Suzhou Medical College was merged into the school; in 2002, the Second Health School of Suzhou was also merged into our school. It passed the assessment of provincial college placement council in 2002 and was promoted as Suzhou Health College in 2005. It has enrolled over 8000 full-time students. It has 3 campuses with an area of 690 mu and construction area of 230,000 square meters. Shuyuan campus is located in Shuyuan Lane in the old city area of Suzhou. Shihu campus is in the northern part of Suzhou International Education Park. Mudu campus is situated in the ancient town Mudu.

The college mainly takes in graduates of senior middle school for 3 years. It has specialties such as nursing, rehabilitation therapy technology, pharmacology, medical laboratory technology, health labatory and quarantine technology, medical nutrition, pharmaceutical preparation, medicine management, oral medicine technology, eye technology, medical accountancy, medical information management, food storage and sale, community management and service, hotel management etc. which cover almost all allied health majors. Among them, nursing is the brand specialty of Jiangsu Province with key financial aid from central and provincial government. It undertook many inportant scientific research projects in the 9th, 10th, and 11th Five-Year. Medical labortory technology and oral medicine technology are featured specialties of Jiangsu Province.

The college sets up Nursing Department, Lab-tech and Pharmacology Department, Stomatology Department, Basic Science Department, and Hotel Management Specialty Office. The college not only undertakes daily work of Provincial Health Training Center and Provincial Health Vocational Teaching Group, but also functions as English Nurse Training Center assigned by Business Department.

The college has 343 full-time teachers, among which 32% of them are of advanced professional titles, about 119 teachers are masters and doctors , about 245 of them are medical professionals as well as teachers, 4 teachers are experts employed by National Medicine Exam Center, nearly 50 teachers have been engaged in editing provincial programmed teaching materials, several teachers are backbones of developing national teaching schemes. The president is a member of Allied Health Education Guidance Committee of Education Ministry. In the last 5 years, college teachers have undertaken 2 scientific research projects of Health Ministry, 35 of Health Department, 12 of Education Department, 56 of collegiate level with 5 national patents, 1 Award of New Technology Introduction by Health Department. They have published up to 200 papers including 7 SCI in the last 2 years.

The college has nursing rehabilitation lab building, lab-tech and pharmacology lab building, stomotology building and complex lab building etc with advanced professional teaching facilities of over 46,000,000 yuan. The college has 12 language labs with multi-media and 2 closed-circuit TV system with 16 channels.
The library has 360,000 volumes of books including over 300,000 paper books, 58,000 electronic books and 7829 kinds of Chinese and foreign language magazines. The gymnasium has construction area of 41,000 square meters.

The college has service practice bases. Suzhou Huaxia Stomatology Hospital and its False Tooth Processing Center, Suzhou Eye Hospital and Sanyuan Hotel ( 3 star hotel also for foreigners) and Nutrition Canteen not only bear relevant teaching task, but also provide service for people outside. It has over 40 stable clinical hospitals of third level to practice outside the college, 108 practice sites locate in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai etc. They provide very good environment for clinical interns and practice of all specialities.

The college is very active in external communication, with fine? corporation with relevant colleges and universities in Hong Kong area, the US, Australia, Holland etc. Groups of oversea specialists and experts visit the college to give lectures each year. The college has sent many teachers to the US, Japan, Denmark, Singapore, Australia etc. to examine or make an advanced study.
